The long wait, and the state of America
As of now, with the states Joe Biden is leading, we're heading for a razor-thin victory of 270 electoral votes. Pennsylvania, though, still has the mail-in ballots to count, which are expected to be overwhelmingly Democratic. If so, then Joe will have 290 electoral votes.
This, obviously, was not what we were hoping. I'll take the victory, however it comes, but this says much about the state our our country.
We're in a state where half the electorate is perfectly happy voting for a fascist. This time we can't blame Russia or Wikileaks. This is all home-grown American idiocy.
I'm not going to sugarcoat it. If Joe does pull it out, he'll have a hard time bringing the country together. Nearly half the electorate is so frightened and deceived that it voted for Trump a second time. Fear works in these our latter days.
But, we persevere. We march on. What else are we supposed to do? As I wrote yesterday, a Biden victory is just the end of this battle. The war goes on. However, we underestimated our opponents' strength. That's something we can't do again.
It pained me to my core to see my fellow Cuban Americans turn out for Donald Trump in Miami. And it pains me to see just what a parlous state our country is. Neither is a reason for surrender. Each is a reason to continue the fight.
So settle in. The second-worst scenario has taken place. (The worst being an outright Trump victory.) This isn't Joe's first time at the rodeo. Patience.
