Weekend self-care open thread: Fight the power

We're getting an early start on Black History Month this weekend.

It's supremely silly that we have to have a "Black History Month". Or any other history month geared to a specific non-white group. Our history IS American history. Blacks. Hispanics. Asians. Natives. Women. Gay. This country has always been a country of mongrels. It's what has made us strong. It's what has made us survive. But the dominant white discourse consigns us to the "other". As if we're merely tolerated.

Fuck that. Especially in regards to Black history, it is American history. It is American culture, art, politics. Without Black Americans, this country would be unrecognizable. Consigning Black history to February is pernicious. It serves to ghettoize us.

But I'm in no ways tired. Our ancestors marched and bled for us. All races, all creeds worked to make this a more perfect union. And in a few short days, we'll celebrate what our Black brothers and sisters did for this Republic. I yearn and work for a day when all of our histories are merely "history", not segmented into neat boxes. We, too, are America, to paraphrase the poet.

This weekend, we will fight the power.
