Decisions Are Imminent

Donald Trump will be indicted multiple times in 2023.

It's no longer a matter of if but when. Tuesday's Cheeto Mussolini meltdown all but confirms that the dominoes are about to fall, likely starting with DA Fani Willis in Fulton County, Georgia. Trump can claim "perfect call" all he wants but the truth of the matter is that he attempted to "find" 11,780 votes by coercing Georgia election officials in a manner that is not, how we say, legal. What we're hearing out of Georgia are terms like "multiple defendants" meaning that folks like Lilliputian Lindsey Graham have also been sleeping uneasily these past few nights. When exactly this happens in Georgia we don't yet know but all indications are that Fani "The Hammer" Willis may very well be the first shoe to drop in what will come to be known as The Trump Year Of Accountability.

This is why folks like LL and I have remained optimistic during these past two years. Life is not a Law and Order episode. These things take time. When you shoot for the king, you best not miss. Prosecutors only have shot to set historic precedence and indict a former United States President. Whether it's Fani Willis in Fulton County, Jack Smith at the Department of Justice, the court case of E. Jean Carroll, or even the restarted investigation of Manhattan prosecutors, Donald Trump will finally face the music due to his lifetime of crime. While we all have our theories as to why he was so hellbent on trying to overturn the 2020 election, chief among them has to be the fact that after 4 years he was now returning to public life a marked man. He could no longer be shielded by presidential immunity, both real and perceived. What the January 6th Committee showed was exactly how Trump got more and more desperate in the days and weeks after the election with the insurrection being his final, most extreme act to defy history and retain his seat of power. Trump knew that were he to lose he would be at the mercy of a justice system (along with his creditors, both foreign and domestic) that no longer saw him as being above the law. It's why, to this day, he continues to deny, deflect, and defer everything he's likely done onto his political opponents.

The naysayers will remain. Because they know that people are inherently impatient. But while there exists a subset of these people on social media, none of them are, in fact, legal experts. None of them know what's going on behind the scenes with Merrick Garland, Jack Smith, or Fani Willis. Many of them thought the case out of Manhattan was irrevocably lost and yet they were oddly quiet when the case resumed in November. The best part of all of this is while Fani Willis will likely make history, she will be the first and will not be the last. The other indictments will follow down the line. And then, the GOP will have to decide if it wants to continue to go all-in on an indicted candidate who still remains outrageously popular with the GOP base. Does the "Party of Law and Order" actually take the risk of endorsing its 2024 nominee residing in a prison cell? Or do they settle for the Florida fascist who is deeply unpopular in 49 out of 50 states?

Regardless, the moral arc of the universe is once again slowly bending toward justice. History will show how perilously close America came to losing our democracy during the Trump years. The specter of Trump still deeply influences the entire GOP. But the chickens are coming home to roost. Trump has been a private citizen for over 2 years. Investigations have been ongoing this entire time. Every one of his social media posts is a confession. Fani Willis is simply the first of many knocking loudly at his door.

Let's sit back and enjoy him get his comeuppance.
