Democratic National Convention, Day 4: It's Joe Time!

Well, here we are, folks. Tonight, Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., accepts the nomination to be the Democratic Party's candidate for the presidency.

Last night topped the previous two nights. Kamala Harris, our next vice president, shined as Joe's wing-woman.

But I have to say that I was most moved by President Barack Obama's speech.

Here is a man who has never given up on the promise of America practically begging the citizenry to also not give up. Begging the American people to give a damn, to fight the same way their ancestors had fought. To fight the way that people all over the world fight for a better life. Every time he paused and let out a slight breath of air, it was like a punch to the head. That this world-historical figure has to go cap in hand to urge his fellow citizens to perform the most basic function of a citizen was painful to watch. But Pres. Obama knows what's at stake. We all do. Nothing but maximum effort is insufficient.

Tonight we hear from Joe Biden, a man whom Pres. Obama calls his brother. Tonight we hear how he plans to pull us back from the brink. But as Pres. Obama said: Democracy isn't a transaction. I give you my vote and you fix everything. Too many people saw that as what Pres. Obama was promising in 2008, when nothing could be further from the truth. Democracy is a fragile garden: left untended, it'll turn to weeds, or to desert. It's time for us to be gardeners again.
