The loneliness of the elite white liberal voter

The bloviating of someone who should know better.

Let us, my friends, mourn the elite white liberal voter.

You know the type. This is the voter who was "disappointed" by president-elect Barack Obama before he took office. And, truth be told, disappointed that candidate Obama chose Joe Biden to be his running mate in 2008. This same voter who in 2016 just couldn't bring him or herself to vote for Hillary Clinton. The same voter in 2020 who was miffed that not only did candidate Biden trounce Bernie Sanders, but who was aghast that Mr. Biden chose Kamala Harris as his running-mate.

This is the type of voter who is convinced he or she knows better than the candidate running. That they have a special insight which the clods running are lacking. That if only they were listened to, we'd have one thousand years of liberal governance, and the streets would flow with milk and honey.

This type of voter is normally white, normally male, and normally well-to-do. They blanch at the slightest setback. For people who have never had to struggle in their lives, anything other than a smooth road and calm weather is existentially frightening.

Let us look at Rob Reiner, aka "Meathead". Reiner is Hollywood royalty, being the son of the tzaddik Carl Reiner. I wonder what his father thinks of Meathead going full ageist on Pres. Biden. Reiner is treating a debate performance as if it's the determinative factor in the general election. As if the election were next week, and not in four months. Reiner is willing to throw Joe Biden overboard because of a minor squall. He's never had to captain a boat in any inclement weather. He's never had to tack safely to shore. He and his brethren are of the opinion that Pres. Biden should  be beating the pants off of Donald Trump in the polling, and yet the polling shows a close race; therefore, it must be Pres. Biden's fault. Time to ditch the old guy. (Says the old guy.) Get someone, anyone—no, not Vice President Harris—to right the ship and captain us to that glorious port of our dreams.

Although this is no excuse for his lack of manly vigor, he is merely reacting to the jihad which the political press has launched against Pres. Biden. Men of his like are conditioned to treat what is on the front page of The New York Times as holy writ. The Times is "liberal", and if the Times is worried, then he and his friends should also be worried. In his world, three hundred million Americans wait on the edge of their seats to be told what to think by the Times, after all. Surely they do, since that's his modus operandi. And he is a very smart and serious man, only concerned with the common good.

And then there's this:

See, anyone who goes against the media tantrum is a cultist. A cultist just like the cultists for that Black woman! We're just lobotomized sheep who will do whatever our political masters say. Unlike Beutler and his profession, who are fearless truthtellers in a world ever averse to Cassandras. We're the irrational lumpenproletariat, clinging to a confused old man who needs to retire and be sent off to bed with milk and cookies. We need to stop listening to those who have led us astray; Brian et. al. will take us on the Golden Path.

These people are shocked—shocked!—that their auto da fĂ© is not having the desired effect. That rather than crying with one voice Deus lo volt!, we have been telling them in no uncertain terms to go get fucked. That many of us are now agreeing with Trump on one thing: that the press is the enemy of the people. Add to that liberal elitists like Rob Reiner, whom I would not want in a foxhole next to me when the shit hits the fan. They see themselves as thought leaders, and are flummoxed that we the great unwashed don't see them that way. They love "democracy", as long as they get to be the vanguard.

The likes of the New York Times editorial board are no doubt taken aback. But they have only themselves to blame. For years they've alienated their natural audience. This was the final straw. And men like Rob Reiner who parrot their pronouncements are on the wrong side of history. In these times when everything is on the line, their lack of nerve will be noted and remembered. No one owes them a thing because of their self-appointed positions. They would do well to remember that Biden voters watch movies, too.

Addendum

And this, my friends, is the long and the short of it.
