Breaking news open thread: Oh lordy, there are tapes

We interrupt your first weekend of the year 2021 of the Common Era to bring you reports of some light treason.

The Washington Post has just broken a huge story. It has recordings of soon-to-be-indicted-felon Donald Trump pressuring Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find him votes" in order to flip the states electoral votes to him.

I know, I know. Many of us are at the ends of our tethers. Joe Biden will swear the oath of office in seventeen short days, and we're still confronted by this imbecilic monster.

But take note of that word: "imbecilic". 

Fascists, by their nature, are not smart. No one would have mistaken any of the Nazi inner circle for intellectuals. But what the Nazis and Italian Fascists had was brutal cunning and economic and social situations which lent themselves to the fantastical blandishments of strongmen. 

Neither Trump nor anyone left around him have that brutal cunning possessed by 1930s fascists. And our parlous economic and social conditions were, in fact, created by Trump and his enablers. These are not smart people, but neither are they clever or benefitting from societal collapse. Trump is reduced to jibber-jabbering and strong-arming Mr. Raffensperger, and being stymied at every turn.

Later, I'll have more to write about the treason-weasels in the GOP who will contest Pres.-elect Biden's election win. But these new revelations places them in an even worse position. They are now working to upend a democratic election result for a man trying to use all the levers of power he has to manufacture votes. I hope they have good lawyers.
