True Crime Friday: A Serial Killer’s Favorite Target: Deep Dive

Serial killers can target males, women and children. Although, the males they target almost always tend to be gay. Therefore, they are seen by the predator as weak just like women. Of course, this is far from the truth but killers have a warped view of the world. There is a deep seated hatred of women and girls throughout the world. In this article, I will do a deep dive as to why this is prominent within cultures.

Control of the Gatekeepers

Many cultures view women and girls as impure. But also as sinful creatures who have been sent by the devil to lead men astray. Men tend to associate themselves with the “purity” of the mind, and women with the “corruption” of the body. Since most men view women and girls as weak then processes such as sex, menstruation, breastfeeding and even pregnancies are seen as disgusting. There are cultures that believe in child brides, women who are raped must be punished sometimes executed. Women that commit adultery are stoned to death. Since men seem to think that women are on earth simply to fulfill men’s lust they must be controlled. Women bring life into the world so some men want to control women therefore, they control life.

Good Girl versus Bad Girl

Throughout the world 50% of men said they had more right to a job than a woman. Almost a third of respondents thought it was acceptable for men to hit their female partners. Women are seen as property of men not as individuals with their own thoughts and needs. As far as sexism goes men tend to view women in a hostile fashion or in benevolent fashion. Someone that they must protect and/or control. Understanding subjective perceptions of mate value of predatory men may help identify those that hold misogynistic views or may be prone to violence against women.

Crime Against Women Not Taken Seriously

As most of you are aware, I watch documentaries on crimes. I also read and do research on true crime stories. Before the victim get introduced in the documentary, I know that 9 times out of 10 it will a woman or a young girl. Men and particularly men in authority do not believe women when they accuse a man of a crime. A man can accuse a woman of a crime and is believed immediately. It will take at least 5-10 women to accuse a man of a crime and be somewhat believed. The age old adage of why did she not come forward sooner or she will ruin his life always gets tossed around. There are thousands of rape kits that have never been investigated because of budget cuts. Why would rape kits be in a budget cut if women’s crimes were taken seriously? I think we all know the answer to the question. This is just one of the major reasons why serial killers target women  because they know the authorities do not take crimes against women seriously.

Take for instance, Samuel Little who was suspected to have murder nearly 93 women over a span of two decades. Little would be arrested and released numerous times because of the victims he chose. He once said that he chose his victims because of who they were on the societal scale. It is the theory of the less dead. Meaning that the victims did not mean much in life and even less when they are dead.

During another serial killer’s reign of terror an activist group requested police reports of some of the victims of the Grim Sleeper. Throughout the reports they kept seeing the letters L.D., at the top of the pages. Curious as to what those letters meant they asked a retired police officer. He told them that some groups of murder victims were classified by L.D., on the importance to whether their case would be worked. All of Lonnie Franklin’s victims who were Black were labeled Less Dead (L.D).

Theodore “Ted” Bundy was a clean cut good looking chap so there was no way he could be a killer. He was educated, worked on a governor’s campaign and was the Assistant Director of a Suicide and Rape Prevention Center. How could a man like this be a killer? That is what the authorities thought. Women came forward with his name, description and the make/model of his car. Yet Bundy went on to kill numerous women.

There was the massacre in 1991, when a man walked into Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas. He fatally shot 22 people in what at the time was the worst mass shooting in modern United States history. The killer had written a letter to his neighbors calling women vipers. Eyewitnesses said the killer passed over men in the cafeteria to shoot women at point blank range.

I remember watching crime shows like Cops. The police would warn women to just do what the criminals wanted and they would be let go. I remember telling my dad, don’t criminals watch these shows and the news too. Why are telling women to be victims? He agreed. Why would the police advise women not to try to fight back when their lives are on the line? Because women’s are blamed for almost all of life ills.

A Loss of Power

There is a movement afoot called Involuntary Celibacy (INCEL), there are quite a few men that fall into this group. They think women belong to them. Some men are feeling down right slighted because a great number of women are choosing to remain single and not have children. This has been taken as a signal of war to some men and frankly some women as well. The Cat Lady insults have been around for years only now it is seen as a strength instead of a weakness. A major political party is upset that women are choosing prey-tell not to stay in abusive marriages, not have children and have their own bank accounts. If a woman chooses to get married and have children that is her choice and if she chooses to stay single and not have children that is also her choice. Women have a right to their bodies and choices just like men.

Summary

Throughout history women have been seen as the property of men. We have been divided on purpose as good girl vs bad girl. The good girl must be protected and live an upright life which has been predated by men and their laws. On the other hand, the bad girls can be used, abused and killed because they are seen as less worthy. Now if the good girl happens to become a bad girl then she can no longer be held in the good company of other good girls. Women and girls should not have to pay the price for warped men and how they view society. The rise of serial killers are waning. They have been around for centuries and we will never be rid of them but now due to women organizing, advocacy groups and men willing to stand up for their wives, daughters, friends, family and peers we are seeing a change in the public’s attitude towards women. It will continue to be a fight but I think it is a fight worth winning.
