Weekend self-care open thread: The music of Florence Price
It's a truism that Western art music, commonly known as "classical music", is the purview of white men. Such a truism, however, ignores all the other people of diverse backgrounds who have contributed to the mosaic which is classical music.
For this weekend's self-care, we'll sample the music of American composer Florence Price. From Wikipedia:
Florence Beatrice Price (nĂ©e Smith; April 9, 1887 – June 3, 1953) was an American classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. Price is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra.[2]
There are so many wonderful composers to discover outside of the Big Names. Go out into the hills and find some gems.
