We interrupt regular programming to bring you news of treason

As you know, normally we take a break on the weekend to have some self-care. And we will have an abbreviated self-care starting tomorrow. However, news broke yesterday which is stupefying.

The New York Times broke a story which claimed that Russian intelligence agencies secretly offered Afghan militants bounties for every American soldier they killed. From the story:

American intelligence officials have concluded that a Russian military intelligence unit secretly offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing coalition forces in Afghanistan — including targeting American troops — amid the peace talks to end the long-running war there, according to officials briefed on the matter.

The United States concluded months ago that the Russian unit, which has been linked to assassination attempts and other covert operations in Europe intended to destabilize the West or take revenge on turncoats, had covertly offered rewards for successful attacks last year.

Islamist militants, or armed criminal elements closely associated with them, are believed to have collected some bounty money, the officials said. Twenty Americans were killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2019, but it was not clear which killings were under suspicion.

So, not just offered them money, but actually paid them. And this was during Donald Trump's misbegotten "peace talk" with the Taliban.

But it gets worse. (Emphasis mine.)

The intelligence finding was briefed to President Trump, and the White House’s National Security Council discussed the problem at an interagency meeting in late March, the officials said. Officials developed a menu of potential options — starting with making a diplomatic complaint to Moscow and a demand that it stop, along with an escalating series of sanctions and other possible responses, but the White House has yet to authorize any step, the officials said.

The Rat was briefed on this in late March. You know what else happened around that time, or soon after? Yes, the Rat decided to invite Vladimir Putin to the G-7 conference.

At this point, we can only assume that The Rat is under orders from his paymaster to burn everything down on his way out and inflict as much damage as he can on the US before he either is thrown in jail or flees to a sad exile in Moscow.

This is, by any stretch of the imagination, treason. Russia is waging a war against US and allied troops in Afghanistan. And the Rat decides to reward its president by inviting him to attend the major conference of the major democratic powers. Trump isn't working in the interests of his own country. He's a bought and paid-for stooge of an adversary. And he's doing that adversary's bidding to the detriment of this country, its allies, and their interests.

Many of us think that, assuming Trump is defeated in just over four months, nothing will happen to him. Nothing happened to Nixon, so nothing will happen to Trump.

Nixon was venal and corrupt. But he wasn't a traitor. Trump's actions can be seen as nothing other than treason, from this latest revelation, to allowing 120,000 Americans to die from the coronavirus. Just like it wasn't normal for him to have been elected president in the first place, neither will his exit be normal. He will not be allowed to settle into retirement. Or, worse, he will not be allowed to become a fascist opposition to Joe Biden. Biden has already said that he will allow his Justice Department to take any measures it deems fit to hold those accountable responsible for the disasters of the past almost-four years. And New York Attorney General Letitia James has the entire Trump crime family in her sights. Normally, presidents are allowed to ride off into the sunset. Normally, presidents aren't utter criminals.
