Monday open thread: The Supreme Court did what??
Well, friends, I went to bed last night with a much different piece in mind for this morning. But I'm not at all displeased by this turn of events.
Today, the United States Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling, stating that the 1964 Civil Rights Act applies to the LGBTQ+ community, protecting them from job discrimination. To say this was a welcome surprise would be an understatement. Just a few days after the regime finalized rules stripping health protections from gays, SCOTUS instead expands their rights across the board.
But it doesn't stop there.
The Court also refused to hear several gun rights cases for next term, dealing a blow to Second Amendment activists.
Also, the Court refused to hear a Department of Justice appeal against sanctuary city laws.
It's not all a bed of roses. The Court also declined to hear challenges to the qualified immunity which modern legal doctrine has bestowed upon police. Oddly enough, Clarence Thomas was the justice who would have liked to have heard the cases.
However, that aside, it's hard to not be pleased with today's decisions. That this court expanded civil rights to gay Americans is nothing short of stupendous, especially in the face of a regime hell-bent on removing those rights from them.
Don't get me wrong. This court still leans right. I don't foresee it becoming a new Warren Court barring a reconfiguration under a President Biden. But it's not nothing that this court has dealt three blows to favorite right-wing shibboleths today: on gay rights, gun rights, and immigration. All in all, it's a very good way to start your Monday.
