The Oppenheimer Opportunists
Being a contrarian can be quite lucrative these days.
Just ask any number of "progressive" media personalities who consistently criticize the Democratic Party. Looking down a laundry list of TV hosts and podcasters, and you'll see that those most critical of the party also happen to be those who are the most financially stable. They can take the stance that they do because they know they'll be safe from the Trump Administration's most brutal and repressive actions. Being wealthy shields them from any sort of empathy for those whose mere survival is now at risk as a result of being held hostage to the Trump regime. It has become an exclusive club, with members constantly promoting and elevating each other on their respective media platforms. They are not apologetic about who they are and frequently become angry when anybody calls them out on their views. They are the apex of privilege and don't see any sort of problem that their criticisms of the Democratic Party are then being amplified by Republicans to do even more damage to our most vulnerable communities. All that matters to them is that the page views keep increasing and the checks keep coming in.
This has led to a new class of people I'd like to call Oppenheimer Opportunists.
Oppenheimer Opportunists are folks who would gladly watch the world burn if it meant they could score a few extra dollars. Despite having a public platform to oppose this fascist regime, these individuals are instead ignoring the blatant corruption of Donald Trump and the Republican Party and are instead blaming the Democratic Party. They are Murc's Law personified; for them, nothing Democrats do or don't do will ever be good enough. They prey on their audience being uneducated and frequently belittle Democratic leadership even though they're the minority party in Congress. Being an Oppenheimer Opportunist means that you refuse to acknowledge any Democratic Party wins in flipping seats or holding the line against this administration at the state and local level. This entire class of pundits exists to both-sides everything to death in an effort to try and conflate both parties together in the minds of their viewers. An Oppenheimer Opportunist knows better, but the temptation to undermine the Democratic Party for personal financial gain is simply too great to pass up.
The net worth of these Oppenheimer Opportunists is something to behold. Ana Kasparian of The Young Turks kicks us off with a net worth of a meager $2 million. Her former co-host, Kyle Kulinski, who branched off to create his own podcast, Secular Talk, chimes in with a net worth of $3 million. Former MSNBC host Joy Reid is worth $4 million, with her income now coming from The Joy Reid Show podcast. The Young Turks founder and failed congressional candidate, Cenk Uygur, has a net worth of $5 million. Cenk's nephew and all-around scumbag Hasan Piker is worth $10 million. Kulinski's wife, Krystal Ball, who hosts the Breaking Points podcast, is worth an even bigger amount of $44 million. And, of course, we can't forget mainstay television hosts like Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, who have a net worth valued at $120 million and $140 million, respectively. Crime may not pay, but criticism of Democrats most certainly does.
But who exactly is paying these revolutionary cosplayers for their services?
That is where it gets interesting. Because having a personal financial incentive to bash Democrats is one thing, but what's equally telling is who is behind the scenes making it all happen. In the case of the aforementioned group, the individuals and organizations doing the funding are hiding in plain sight. Their sponsorship of the various programs is public knowledge and can be accessed through a simple search engine query. These are not some secret super PACs whose donors remain a mystery. These records are public, and understanding how and why they have an interest in sowing discord among the Democratic Party is the story that needs to be told.
Let's start with one of our habitual offenders, The Young Turks. The platform that brought us the trio of Democratic Party haters in Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and Kyle Kulinski. Named after the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide, The Young Turks has been active for over two decades now, thanks largely to donations from two specific individuals: former Louisiana Republican Governor Buddy Roemer gave $4 million in 2014, and multibillionaire DreamWorks CEO and Democratic Party super donor Jeffrey Katzenberg led a team of investors that donated $20 million in 2017. With a sizable sum from someone like Katzenberg, you'd think that The Young Turks would provide favorable coverage for the Democratic Party. But Katzenberg himself is notorious for having less-than-progressive views on the issue of homelessness in his native L.A., so it should come as no surprise that his perspective was gradually embraced by those on the air. Shortly after the worst of the pandemic, co-host Ana Kasparian openly came out against homeless people as well as anti-transgender individuals, and she went as far as to disaffiliate with the Democratic Party in 2024. When you drink enough of the boss's Kool-Aid, it filters down into your own personal beliefs. And when your chief funder is a multibillionaire who is worried about the "aesthetics" of his city having too many of "those" homeless people, you're more than happy to throw them under the bus to keep the paychecks flowing.
Now, not everyone has access to the Jeffrey Katzenbergs of the world. That is why folks like Krystal Ball and Joy Reid have to rely on their viewers to maintain their millionaire status. For Ball, she co-hosts Breaking Points with conservative commentator Saagar Enjeti, reverting back to the early 2000s model made popular by people like Tucker Carlson. Carlson famously hosted Crossfire, a CNN program designed for Republicans and Democrats to openly and oftentimes passionately argue about the key issues of the day. Ball and Enjeti have revisited this model, but instead of arguing with each other (which does happen occasionally), they'll turn their righteous anger against the evil "Establishment" Republicans and Democrats. For Ball and Enjeti, the whole idea is to build up a viewership of political cynics, and they do that by bothsidesing the hell out of the issues of the day. By claiming that both parties are equally to blame, Ball and Enjeti have created a subscription model that appeals to both sides of the aisle, and they are able to bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars via gullible rubes who honestly believe there's no discernible difference between the two major political parties in America.
Like Ball and Enjeti, Joy Reid has also adopted the "both parties are trash" mantra that is all the rage in today's far-left podcasts. Since being dismissed by MS Now right after Trump's re-election, Reid has become a shell of the person she was during the Biden administration, and she was pretty terrible even then. Unlike Kasparian, Reid still identifies as a Democrat, but she admitted that she's "barely hanging on" supporting a party she doesn't feel is doing enough to fight fascism. Since leaving MS Now, Reid's podcast has been hypercritical of Democrats and the Democratic Party, and she's openly stated she wouldn't vote for Democrats who refuse to publicly end ties with Israel. She also hopped aboard the Mamdani train and admitted she would never adhere to the "vote Blue no matter who" mantra necessary to take back the country from Trump and Republican fascism. Being one of the newer additions to far-left podcasting, Reid is still working to find her niche, but as we've seen, these niches are often filled by becoming more and more extreme (i.e., Hasan Piker). This past week, Reid defended Rula Jebreal's racist attack against Hakeem Jeffries, insisting that "even our friends can get it wrong." Declaring her friendship with one of the far-left's most notorious racists is exactly what Joy Reid has willingly become to keep earning the cheddar in 2026.
Last and least, we have Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, who have become multimillion-dollar comedians who love nothing but to take shots at Republicans and Democrats from their seven-figure mansions. Stewart and Maher will argue that they're comedians and entertainers and are under no obligation to mock a single party. But we see through them. We see how both of them have not only maintained their wealth but have grown their wealth with Donald Trump in office. They aren't the ones whose paychecks are nearly maxed out by the increased costs of gas, food, and housing. They are doing just fine during this second Trump administration, and their stability and White privilege allow them to mock Joe Biden and Kamala Harris from their perch atop Multimillionaire Mountain. They're insufferable now and will become even more insufferable in the lead-up to the 2028 election, where it'll be guaranteed that they'll find some fatal flaw in the next Democratic presidential nominee. Jon Stewart and Bill Maher can watch the world burn because the flames will never get past their own personal front gates. If it helps them sell a few extra tickets at their next comedy show, then so be it.
We are living in a Matrix simulation where there are two clear lines: good and evil. But our Oppenheimer Opportunists are trying to straddle that line. They are pretending to be good Democrats who simply want the party to do better. They're so fired up because they care so damn much. To their credit, they do care, but only about themselves. Because anybody willing to throw our most vulnerable communities under the bus to make money on a television program or podcast is a true piece of work. History will remember the Oppenheimer Opportunists and what they did during this time. It will show how they caved and catered to a fascist government so they could continue making money. History won't be kind, nor should it be. These individuals willingly sold out all so that they could maintain and grow their wealth during the most trying time since the Civil War. They can and should be shamed for throwing our most vulnerable communities under the bus for their own personal gain. They may claim to be Democrats, but they do not represent those of us who truly care about the party. They're not part of us, nor should we pretend that they are. They can and should remain dead to us for the foreseeable future.
