"Just two more years," they say. "We just have to hang on for two more years."
The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that the Education Department has finalized a rule that will force schools to prove that the loans students are taking out are paying off.
Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music, and cosmetic certification programs will be hit the hardest. For-profit programs will also be hit particularly hard.
While the Trump administration is framing the policy as “accountability” for higher education, and some are welcoming the move, others see it as an attack on those whose work is important regardless of salary.

A New Jersey seafood company has recalled nearly 333 pounds of tuna distributed across five states after health officials found high levels of a toxin linked to histamine poisoning.
Buckhead Meat Company, doing business as Trinity Seafood in Lakewood, voluntarily launched the recall on July 24 after the New Jersey Department of Health notified the company that two tuna samples had tested for high levels of scombrotoxin.
Scombrotoxin can cause scombroid poisoning, with symptoms appearing within minutes to two hours and often resembling an allergic reaction, including facial flushing, sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache, hives and abdominal cramps.

The U.S. Department of Education on Monday formally rescinded the 2024 Title IX regulations of President Joe Biden’s administration that had interpreted the statute’s protections to prohibit discrimination based on students’ sexual orientation and gender identity.
In their place, the department formally reinstated 2020 regulations from President Donald Trump’s first administration, which will appear in the Sept. 29 Federal Register and take immediate effect without a notice-and-comment period.
In the two years since Trump was re-elected, stories like these have been a daily occurence. Every day some new horror. Every day plumbing some new depth of stupidity. Every day a new iteration of mindless cruelty for its own sake.
Two years of this. And yes, Democrats will most likely take back one if not both houses of Congress. No more Trump judges. Investigations and actual oversight. But let us not kid ourselves: it will be constant warfare between Congress and Trump. And Trump has shown himself quite willing to ignore Congress. He will stymie and hinder any investigations. He will grind Washington down to a state of even more dysfunction than it has now. November will not be a panacea. And I don't want anyone reading this to then get discouraged.
Because you know the usual suspects will.
"Why haven't the Dimmycrats arrested him?!"
"Why hasn't Hakeem Jeffries gone into the Oval Office with a gun and put a cap in his ass?!"
"Why is Chuck Schumer still writing sternly-worded letters?!"
Instead of the refrain "just two more years," we could have been looking at the final two years of Joe Biden's second term.
Instead of the refrain "just two more years," we could be gearing up for Kamala Harris's re-election campaign.
Instead, we must endure two more years of a madman. Instead we must live with the constant worry of what this man will do next. Instead we have to resign ourselves to fighting a political war to not let things get even worse, rather than engaging in a politics of improving the lives of Americans.
Is Palestine free? Are eggs cheaper? Is gas at $1.99?
I'm simply done with the American voter. And I'm even more done with the non-voter. You get what you vote for. And you get what you allow someone else to vote for while not taking the most basic action of a citizen yourself.
And let's be even more frank: We have no guarantee that the good and decent burghers of Wisconsin will remember this disaster in 2028. We simply have no guarantee that the voters of Pennsylvania will accord a Democratic Congress the grace it needs and not throw their votes back to the GOP.
What we have to realize is that the majority of Americans are, to put it bluntly, incurious morons. They have the attention spans of fleas. They are pure anti-intellectual idiots mired in one grievance or another. Like male Latino voters, they will flip a coin and base their votes on "vibes".
I don't want to harsh anyone's buzz. But I believe we must be clear-eyed in what we must face. There are no easy solutions. A Democratic tsunami in November is simply not the end of things. It's barely the end of the beginning. Because we've been on this rodeo before, and every time I'm reminded of this quote from the 1981 John Boorman film Excalibur:
