True Crime Friday: Jason Thomas Scott, The Mother-Daughter Serial Killer

The police discovered this serial killer by accident. A gun store owner came into his business one morning and discovered multiple guns, ammunition and cash was missing from the safe. Suspicion was on the store owner and police thought this would be an open and shut case. They were wrong. According to the police, Scott was a "brilliant" criminal who had studied forensic textbooks. Scott also changed his modus operandi to throw investigators off. Scott was very knowledgeable in forensic science techniques giving him foresight of how to clean up crime scenes. He used his knowledge to confuse law enforcement. Scott also managed to deceive an FBI profiler into believing that the crimes were not connected. Scott holds two master's degrees, one in information systems management from the University of Maryland.

Jason Thomas Scott Early Childhood

It has been reported that Jason Thomas Scott did not suffer childhood trauma like most serial killers. Obviously, there was something disturbing with his thinking or I would not be writing this article about his crimes. Scott grew up with wealthy parents and came from a close knit family. Jason Thomas Scott lacked for nothing. Around the age of ten is when Jason began to get into trouble. He became a peeping Tom and burglar. Scott led a double life, he worked at a UPS sorting facility correcting addresses on packages that were returned as undeliverable. He sold stolen merchandise from the truck of his car to customers. This included guns he had stolen. Scott used his position at UPS to research his victims and carry out criminal activities.

The Victims of Jason Thomas Scott

  • Vilma Butler, 46
  • Karen Lofton, 45
  • Karissa Lofton, 16
  • Delores Dewitt, 42
  • Ebony Dewitt, 20
Jason Scott Thomas stalked Vilma Butler for months before murdering her. The victim had notice strange signs that someone had been in her home on several occasions. She also told family and friends she felt she was being followed. It is unknown how many other victims suffered at the hands of this killer. It is believed he probably has more victims that he may have murdered. We do know that other victims of his crimes include multiple home invasions, setting homes and cars on fire to hide evidence.

UPS Connection

UPS employees who knew Scott said he was a model employee and never caused anyone any trouble. After receiving a tip, the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) searched Scott's house. The Prince George's County police did a follow up search of the residence again finding evidence that connected Scott to a December 2007 burglary. During this search other crimes that he had committed were discovered. It was discovered that Scott had raped a teenage girl and recorded it while he was dressed like a Ninja.

The Spooky House

An accomplice of Scott who assisted with the gun sales and burglaries agreed to help investigators. The accomplice told law enforcement that he and Scott were also involved in a number of home invasions in 2008 and 2009. A deserted mansion that Scott named the Spooky House is where he plotted his crimes and hid his stolen merchandise. One of the murder victims had a Beech Tree leaf left on her. Police searched the area but did not see any Beech Trees. The leaf was taken as evidence. A break in the case came when an informant revealed that Scott would split the proceeds with him after a burglary at a deserted mansion. Scott called it the “spooky house.” That mansion is where the Beech Tree was discovered.

Lady Justice

Scott is currently serving 100 years behind bars for his many horrific crimes.
