The GOP Is Really Bad At This: Easter 2024 Edition

It's that time again.

This weekend, the outrage of the moment for the GOP came when President Joe Biden issued his Proclamation on Transgender Visibility to honor the International Transgender Day of Visibility held annually on March 31st. This was the fourth consecutive year Biden had issued a proclamation, continuing his and his administration's stalwart support for our vulnerable transgender community. Additionally, the White House hosted its Annual Easter Egg Roll, which includes guidelines from the American Egg Board, which has hosted the event for the last 45 years. Among the board's guidelines are ensuring that the eggs do not have religious symbols, something that has been consistent across the last 8 presidential administrations. Both of these have been ongoing practices since Biden took office.

But this is an election year. And Republicans are the ultimate snowflakes. They thrive on grievance politics and so it was none other than Mike "Moses" Johnson who drew attention to these longstanding White House practices by tying them together in the 2024 edition of the Democrats' War On Christianity during Easter weekend. While this momentarily gave the GOP a boost, it was quickly shot down by those of us who still believe in things like facts and the truth. Johnson was again revealed to be the religious hypocrite that he is. Joe Biden was again boosted up as a champion for the transgender community. All while the GOP's own nominee, Donald Trump, was busy hocking $60 Bibles and being mocked on Saturday Night Live throughout Christianity's Holy Week.

Here's the thing.

We know all this. We know that the GOP hates the transgender community. We know that they fear Christian "persecution" while simultaneously trying to make our country a Christian theocracy. None of this is new. When they have their puerile pouts, they are out of a place of weakness rather than a place of strength. They know they are on the wrong side of the transgender issue. They know that the majority of Americans embrace a pluralistic society where all religions play by the same rules and we successfully separate church and state. They know these things, yet continue to double, triple, and quadruple down because they have no other choice. They need to feel persecuted. They need to feel victimized. They need their base to feel fear of the "other." One of the most remarkable political realignments in my lifetime has seen the Democrats become the party of hope and aspiration and the Republicans become the party of fear and hate. The GOP knows this and has to manufacture outrage every so often to remind its dwindling base just how mean and scary the big, bad Democrats are.

Take heed of events like this past weekend. We're winning the culture war. Bigly. Mike Johnson isn't posting his lies on social media for you and me; he's posting for his fear-induced voting base, a base that does not look like or think like the majority of Americans. Meanwhile, middle-of-the-road suburban voters are seeing Johnson's social media posts and are moving more and more toward the Democratic Party. The types of voters who actually believe there is a War On Christianity are already firmly in the GOP's corner. But those who are not are getting pushed further and further away. Joe Biden understands this. That is why he barnstormed the country in the three weeks since the State of the Union, hitting every single swing state including those like North Carolina that are looking more and more in play. The only party actually expanding its voter base is the Democratic Party and at this point, it isn't even close.

Keep talking, Mr. Speaker. Keep up this imagined version of America where you and your Christian brethren are persecuted. Keep waging war on our transgender sisters and brothers whom we decent Americans love and cherish. Keep manufacturing ridiculous controversies that can be disproven with a simple Google search. Keep doing all of this while your party's nominee sends deranged social media messages on Easter, again proving himself to be the least "Christian" man ever elected to hold higher office. Keep doing all this for your dwindling base while we Democrats expand our voters to include independents and Haley voters who are rightfully disgusted by your political party. Keep preaching to the choir while the larger congregation sees you for the hypocrite that you are. Keep doing all this and in just over 7 months, you'll never have to worry about things like the White House Egg Roll and the International Transgender Day of Visibility ever again.

Because you'll be out of a job and the adults will be back in charge.
