Weekend self-care open thread: Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Dolly Parton!
I've never been much of a country fan. A kid from Washington Heights and Inglewood is not likely to boogie down to Merle Haggard. But the one country star whom all of us in the hood knew and loved was Dolly Parton.
Dolly is more than a musician. She's an actor. She's a businesswoman. And, close to my heart, she advocates for childhood literacy and libraries.
Although she assiduously stays above the political fray, it's no secret that she's "one of us". You can't listen to the lyrics to "9 to 5" and think she's some conservative, pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps, heartless Prosperity Gospel believer. I'm sure she votes Democratic. But it's more than that. She's a human being, in the best sense of the word. She sees no one as beneath her. She lives by John Donne's words: No (person) is an island. Hatred and animus are not in her makeup.
So, to celebrate her 78th birthday, we honor Ms. Dolly Parton for this weekend's self-care thread.
In a world where you can be anything, be more Dolly.
As always, dear friends, be ever kind to yourselves and those around you.
