Weekend self-care open thread: Songs in the key of corruption
Well friends, the Rat did it. He's given up on winning re-election, and is just trying to save his own skin as much as possible. Last night, Donald Trump commuted the sentence of his partner-in-crime Roger Stone. This was after Stone had said, without subtlety, that he had the goods on the Rat, had been pressured to flip, but resisted.
The staggering, unbridled level of corruption is unprecedented. Richard Nixon, vile as he was, never went this far, precisely because it would seal his guilt in the eyes of the public.
Of course, in the long run, this won't help the Rat. This incredible act of corruption will knock three or four points off his approval ratings—I know, it should be more, but we have morons for neighbors and fellow-citizens—and should boost Joe Biden's lead.
However, I want to say this: Justice isn't dead. It is in a coma, it's in a parlous state, but it's not dead. I get apoplexed when someone great and good avers that this is the point from which we can no longer return. If that's what one thinks, then why even go on? Sorry, I can't afford despair; I have too many people counting on me. You want justice? You want to restore the rule of law? Then put on your big boy pants and make sure we excise this cancer. It's almost as if the Supreme Court hadn't ruled just this past week that presidents are not above the law. As Cher said in Moonstruck: SNAP OUT OF IT!
For this weekend's self-care, a few songs about corruption in high places.
Rise up, and keep rising up.
As always, be beautiful, kind, and loving to yourselves and to each other.
