Weekend self-care open thread: A bailar la salsa!
So. I was driving home from visiting my wife at the hospital on Friday, and feeling pretty good. Her surgery went off without a hitch, and her doctor is certain that it will alleviate many of the symptoms she's experiencing from Chiari malformation.
I was flipping through my internet radio stations, and I alighted on one of my salsa stations.
A song came on which is one of my favorites. Let me tell you, my friends, I was transported.
For me, this music is part of my being. It's part of my culture. It is part of who I am. It expresses my Latinidad, even when politically many of my fellow Latinos—especially my fellow Cubans—annoy me to no end. But we still have our culture and our music to give us balm through our troubles.
This weekend I shall take you on a journey through some of the music which has shaped me.
As much as they can annoy me, I love my people. It's our culture which keeps us surviving and thriving, like so many marginalized communities in the US. I hope my selections make you shake your rumps.
As always, dear friends, be ever kind, gentle, and joyful with yourselves and those around you.
