Weekend self-care open thread: Say hey, Willie
By the time I was old enough to follow baseball, Mr. Mays had retired and was living a life of the honor due to him. His final team were my beloved New York Mets, but sadly he retired before he was able to win his second World Series ring.
You've seen The Catch. You've seen his smile which beamed to the heavens. You've seen his goodness and decency. There are men and women among us who embody the best of what it means to be American, of what it means to be human. Mr. Mays famously said that when he looked at his pocketbook, what he saw was the other great soul who made his ascent possible, Jackie Robinson. As high as Willie ascended, he never forgot who he was, where he came from, and what he, like every other Black person, had to overcome.
This weekend we celebrate this wonderful man. He played the game as it was supposed to be played. And he lived life as it should be lived. Rest in power, Mr. Mays. May we see your like again.
As always, dear friends, be ever kind, gentle, and joyful with yourselves and those around you.
Play ball!
