Weekend self-care open thread: It's South Carolina time!
2020. Bernie Squee was the favorite to win the Democratic nomination. He had come in a close-second in Iowa, and had won New Hampshire. His minions were crowing that us normies would have to bend the knee to them. It was quite likely that had Sanders won the nomination, we would have had four more years of Donald Trump.
Joe Biden had already been written off. He was yesterday's man. He was a gaffe-machine. He was not ready for prime time.
But here's the thing: the white folks of Iowa and New Hampshire, despite their delusions, are not the base of the Democratic Party. Black people and people of color are. And in South Carolina, things turned around decisively. Representative Jim Clyburn endorsed Candidate Biden. He threw the weight of Black South Carolina into the battle. And after that victory, Candidate Biden was on his way to becoming President Biden.
The Bernie acolytes were fuming. "Why even have a vote in South Carolina?! It'll vote for Trump in the general!"
Yes, their racism came out in full force. Obviously, Black people should have no say in deciding who the Democratic candidate should be. They should just defer to their leftist white betters.
This year the party has skipped Iowa and New Hampshire all together, and placed the first four contests in a diverse set of states. Because this is the base of the party. We all owe a debt of thanks to Rep. Clyburn and South Carolina voters.
So, as we settle in to see just by how much Pres. Biden trounces that guy having a midlife crisis, we shall while away the day with some great music from Black South Carolinians.
Groove on, my friends. Post your favorites in the comments.
As always, be ever kind to yourselves and those around you.
Let's go Joe!
