The final thread of legitimacy is gone

The long-awaited decision from the Supreme Court on whether to heard Donald Trump's claim of absolute presidential immunity dropped this afternoon.

For weeks the thinking was that the delay in announcing the decision was due to SCOTUS deciding to not hear the case, and giving time for writing a dissent.

But, to our collective shock, the court decided to hear his appeal. What this means is that four of the justices voted to take the case.

Keep that in mind: the decision to hear the case did not require a five-to-four vote. It could very well be that the four most reactionary justices decided to consider the appeal, and that was that.

Let's be clear: these four justices—and we hope it was only four—have just cut the last thread of legitimacy the court had. These four justices are waging a stopgap campaign to protect Trump and usher him back into the White House so that he can execute his plans for fascist control. These four justices don't give two farthings about the court's legitimacy, because they hope that if they can get Trump back into office they will become his rubber-stamping servants. These four justices are traitors to the Republic and the Constitution.

However: this is no reason for despair. If anything, it clarifies things.

We must make sure that the decision of these four justices to further delay what is in effect Trump's treason trial becomes a moot point for their machinations. We must ensure that Joe Biden wins in such a crushing manner that MAGA collapses like every other dystopian, authoritarian movement. We have the power in ourselves to shape our future. We always have.

There will be no deus ex machina. We can't count on the court. We can't count on the media growing a conscience. We can't count on Trump keeling over dead.

And that's fine. I'm the sort who is much more keen to be master of his own fate, rather than relying on things falling into place. Sure, things might fall into place; that's been the story of my life. But I've also had a large hand in planning so that those things would fall into place, and I'd be ready to take advantage of it.

Remember what the skinny Black guy from Chi-town said: We are the change we seek. It was ever thus. Our society is too mired in apathy. No society will survive as a free one in that state. For evidence of this we need only to look to Russia. We are the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of human beings who dared big and dreamed even bigger. We are the inheritors of two hundred years of an evolving experiment. This experiment in self-government will not die due to the whims of four justices, not if we say "No! This far and no further. Now we take back what you've tried to steal." Men and women have suffered, bled, and died in wars and social movements. We owe their memories and their sacrifices more than a resigned shrug, or a descent into hopelessness. We are made of sterner stuff than we can imagine.

When we win in November, there will need to be a reckoning with this court. This state of things cannot continue. By this act, those four justices have sealed their doom. They serve not us, but their benefactors. The lessons of 1776 and 1861 will have to be taught once again. Traitors will have no peace.

This court is illegitimate. But it will not define this country's future. You and I are bigger than it. These four justices are little creatures who will meet their political fates. The road to victory is long and arduous, but we are on the path to justice. Let the congregation say "Amen".
