Let them die

The title to this post is what Captain James Tiberius Kirk told his first officer Commander Spock when Spock told him that if the Federation didn't help the Klingons, the race would die. Of course, this set up the denouement where the crusty old Cold Warrior softened and warmed up and accepted that a new age was dawning and peace was the way of the future.

Just this week, I wrote this about the media:
I remember many of us defending the press when Trump was using it as a punching bag. We applauded when the Post put on its masthead "Democracy dies in darkness". I think it's safe to say we erred.
Yesterday, President Biden held a press conference where he angrily pushed back against the special counsel report which, while finding no criminality in his handling of classified documents, condescended by saying that no jury would convict an elderly, well-meaning man with a faulty memory. The special counsel is a Republican, and this was a GOP hatchet job, which is what they wanted.

The press responded by mocking Pres. Biden, treating him with the kind of open contempt and disrespect which they never displayed to Donald Trump. It was one of the most shameful episodes in a media mired in shameful acts.

Let them die.

Trump won't win. But if he does win, let him sic the Department of Justice on them. Let him bankrupt the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, the lot of them, with persucatory cases. Let him bring to bear the awful power of the state onto their heads. Let so-called "journalists" lose their livelihoods. Let them lose their townhouses in Georgetown or the Upper West Side. Let them feel the consequences of their dereliction of duty in defense of democracy.

Let them die.

Let Trump goad his followers into acts of intimidation. Let him goad his followers into acts of violence. Let them, as they lie broken and bleeding on the ground, finally grasp that they failed abjectly in the mission for which the First Amendment was created. Let the clicks they received for shitting on Joe Biden be their comfort.

Let them die.

As they're driven into exile, let them ponder on all the actions in their careers which brought them to this pass. Every snarky aside. Every denigrating "analysis". Every "this is bad for Joe Biden". Let them sit on the banks of the rivers of Babylon and bewail their fate, their lost lives, their lost homes.

Let them die.

Because they have proven themselves unworthy of the trust placed into their hands by our founding document. They afflict the afflicted and comfort the comfortable. They serve as lickspittles to the worst elements of our nation. They yearn for excitement and chaos, and will do all to generate it if none exists. Let them know what it is to live in interesting times.

I would not raise a finger. I would not raise my voice. They spoke not for me; I shall not speak for them. They have brought this on themselves, and on the country for which they have no regard. Democracy dies in darkness; and the media is the one turning off the lights.

Trump would call the press the "enemy of the people". What a farce. The press loved and loves Trump. He's their meal ticket. They need to do no work with him in power. But if he regains power they will soon learn that he no longer has a need for them, and will put them under the kind of interdict never experienced in this country. And they will deserve it.

Let them die. Because I no longer care about them.
