Tuesday open thread: Happy Arrestmas!

Well, dear friends, we are here. The day has arrived. Today, Donald John Trump, so-called 45th President of the United States of America, is going to be arraigned in a Manhattan courthouse and plead to the indictment handed down by a grand jury in the Stormy Daniels matter. Or, we think it's the Stormy Daniels matter. It will be more than interesting to see with what charges Trump gets smacked today.

There will be fingerprints. There will be a mugshot. Sadly, there will be no handcuffs. And he won't emerge from the back of a police cruiser, but from his limousine, flanked by Secret Service agents.

I've had no doubt that Trump would face justice, multiple times. I've conveyed that to you here on this blog, and to my real-life friends and family. Trump traduced this Republic so much that the deference normally shown to a former president doesn't apply. He wasn't a normal president. He was installed with the aid of a foreign hostile state. If he gets back into the White House, he has vowed to do that state's bidding. He's not a traitor in the constitutional sense of the word, but in every moral way he is one. He must be made an example of, so that no future politician thinks that the presidency is a get-out-of-jail-free card. Presidents aren't our lords. They are our servants. Trump thought he had a droit de seigneur. He thought the presidency was akin to an absolute ruler. His frustration at being stymied by Democrats in Congress at every turn was legendary. And now he's about to learn that he's nothing without that office. He's just a mob boss being brought to book.

Due to an archaic electoral system, this country was brought low for four long years by a man who should have been in prison or destitute decades ago. We bent. But we did not break. America is stronger than one petty tyrant. Its institutions withstood assaults on them by a soi disant autocrat. This country does not tolerate traitors to its ideals and its laws. Richard Nixon should have been made an example of; this time we must get it right.

It was a long road to get here. And a long road still lies ahead. But the moral arc of the universe is bending towards justice.

Let's do this.

This is your open thread.

Oh, we know what he's being charged with, as of the publication of this post.
