The GOP Isn't Sending Its Best

Two news articles came across my social media timeline early Thursday afternoon.

The first one involved the human man baby whose ego won't allow him to shut up for a single minute.

The second one involved Governor Bobblehead and his ongoing battle with a cartoon mouse.

Ladies and gentlemen, the frontrunners for your 2024 Republican Party nomination!

This is why I remain optimistic not only about the 2024 election but about the state of American politics as a whole. The GOP is, for lack of a better expression, dumb as shit. No, really. They are. This isn't an intellectual political party by any means. It's why the Tucker Carlsons of the world have to dumb down the information to their viewing audience. The GOP not only didn't not become the Stupid Party as former Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal warned in 2013 but they instead embraced it. They elected 40+ members of the Tea Party to government, a group of legislators who didn't believe in government. They embraced QAnon and its members in Congress. They have lost a generation of Hollywood celebrities, famous athletes, and musical performers. And their desperate culture wars have now embraced censorship and weaponized bigotry against our most vulnerable community members.

That's not to say they aren't cunning. They understand their base and just how rabid it can be. They know how to play a role and be two-faced with their donors versus their everyday constituents. We saw it yesterday how even so-called "intellectuals" like Ted Cruz will stop at nothing to remain in power. The GOP is very much like a cornered animal, lashing out in order to stay alive. They know they are outnumbered so their only hope is to rally their base, a base now so detached from reality that they can no longer recognize what is fact and what is fiction. It is a cult, and this cult is currently being led by two uniquely stupid individuals.

A lot can happen between now and November of 2024. Trump may end up in prison. DeSantis may actually realize nobody outside of Florida likes him. But whoever the GOP nominate will have to adopt their policy positions. They'll have to be anti-woman, anti-immigrant, anti-LGBT, anti-climate, anti-gun violence prevention, and anti-voting rights. They'll have to tolerate and likely need to court the QAnon faction of the party. Privately, they may not share all these policy positions. But publicly, to be the GOP nominee in 2024, they'll have to declare their fealty on these issues. Would they not, then they'd lose access to the big money donors who want to continue to reshape our courts and our country in a dystopian hellhole of Gilead and Panem combined. The ultimate hope is that somehow these extreme positions don't turn away the moderate voters needed to swing away from Joe Biden to the GOP in 2024.

Yeah, good luck with that.
