Jim Crow 2.0: The Voter Suppression Update

Governor Kemp of Georgia—the same governor who apparently did not know that COVID-19 could spread from people who are not symptomatic while COVID-19 was starting to take off—just signed one of the most extreme voter suppression laws in the country.

After Trump lost Georgia in the 2020 race, and later the 2020 Senate through Democrats winning both races, Georgia Republicans decided to double down on suppressing the votes of Black and Brown Georgians.

Furthermore, the law the Georgia state legislature just passed says that the legislature gets to freely interfere with how local elections are done.

Given who the targets of the bills are, it is obvious that the legislature will mainly target jurisdictions where Black voters have the most influence.

Not to be outdone in the cruelty, this law prohibits giving food and water to people waiting in long lines, intentionally engineered to discourage Black voters. This is on top of restricting drop boxes and adding pointless voter ID requirements for voting by mail.

It is vital to point out that the 2020 election was one of the most secure in American history. Yet because their candidate lost, Georgia Republicans have decided to suppress the vote even more.

This is sadly not limited to the Peach State. Republicans all over the country are working overtime to pass voter suppression laws all over the country, Texas and Iowa being horrifying examples.

What Must Happen Next

If you live in a safe blue state (cough, California, cough) and you are financially able, please send help, specifically to Democracy Docket, led by voting rights attorney Marc Elias. He was the one who spent so much time beating down Trump’s frivolous postelection lawsuits.

In addition, send money and follow Black Voters Matter and the New Georgia Project on Twitter.

But this time, Marc is up against people who are not laughably incompetent. Trump’s legal team was not the A team, to say the least. These Republicans are a lot tougher and smarter. So make sure to send help.
It is also time for corporations that helped fund these efforts at voter suppression to feel some pressure.

Below is a list of companies based in Georgia that have decided to back these efforts via donating to the state legislators who passed this depraved legislation. I am ashamed to say Delta is on the list, but I can always find another airline to fly with. I will include contact information for these Georgia corporations so you can let them know how you feel about what they allowed to happen. Boycott them as well. Post any other Georgia corporations in the comments that need to feel some heat as well.
In addition, it would be wise to pressure sporting leagues like the NBA to cancel events in Georgia. Any kind of pressure.

Contact your representatives in the House and Senate and tell them that HR 1, aka For the People Act, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act are priority number one. Without voting rights and election reform, no other priority that we cherish is going to matter.

This fight is too important not to pay attention to.
