The most important election of our lifetime
Editor's Note: Welcome Nancy the Artist to our roster of talent. Now, as you all know, I and Trevor take no position on the primaries as of yet. I haven't made any endorsement, and neither has Trevor. Nancy's post isn't indicative of this blog's position. But many people have made up their minds, and they all have good reasons for doing so. This is Nancy's position, so let's have a good, healthy debate on its merits.
I think it is quite apparent that the next election is the most important election of out lifetime. Donald Trump has already caused so much destruction. The possibility of him having another four years is unthinkable. We simply must win the next election. Winning is the only thing that matters. To that end it is imperative that we pick the person as our nominee who has the greatest possibility of winning. Even if the polls say that every leading democrat beats Trump we can't take those polls for granted. We saw what happened in the last presidential election when all the polls put Hillary way in the lead.

If
we can recognize that the only thing that matters is winning the next
election then it is easy to draw the conclusion that among the top
candidates the person with the greatest chance of winning would be Joe
Biden.
I may not be a racist or a sexist or
antisemitic or homophobic but there are a lot of voters who are and
they would be uncomfortable with a candidate who fits into any of those
categories and they would be less inclined to vote for someone who fits
into those categories.
Most people in this
country are center left and center right so they would not be
comfortable voting for someone who is too far to the left. I have heard
several interviews with people who voted for Trump but don't want to
vote for him in the next election who have said that they would like to
vote for a democrat but they wouldn't vote for Warren because she would
take their healthcare away.
It is easy for
the opposition to convince people who fit into the category of the other
that the other is scary and bad and will do bad things because it
confirms their preset ideas. In the last election cycle the reason it
was so easy for the lies about Hillary to take hold is because of the
rampant sexism that already existed. Joe Biden could be mocked for all
kinds of reasons but it will be harder for them to have traction because
he is white male and Christian so he doesn't fit into the categories of
the other.
You might be thinking and as I
have seen many say that they will choose their preferred candidate in
the primary and that then of course they will vote for whoever the
candidate turns out to be. This sounds like a perfectly reasonable way
of thinking unless you realize that voting in this way opens the door
for anyone to win the nomination and although you might be fine with
voting for whoever might be the nominee far too many people are not.
There
are a lot of people in the center and even people on the right who
don't want to vote for Trump but will not vote for just any candidate
the democrats end up nominating so who our nominee ends up being is of
the upmost importance. We can't afford to throw caution to the wind and
hope for the best. Every vote matters.
Every candidate is flawed. They all have different flaws but they are all flawed. There is no perfect candidate.
There
are not a lot of people whose judgement I trust but I trust the
judgement of President Obama. He picked Joe Biden as his running mate
and I trust that President Obama would not pick someone who was devoid
of important qualities. Biden worked next to President Obama for eight
years. I only observed him from a distance and he has had a profound
affect on my life. I can't even imagine the affect of having the
opportunity to observe him while being at his side. It has to have had a
powerful effect on Biden and most certainly as president Biden would be
receptive to any insight President Obama might bring.
President
Obama understood that if we want to see change in a positive direction
then we have to first build a foundation and a structure that will
support and sustain change so that the change can have strength and
lasting power. There needs to be stability. What Trump and the GOP have
been desperate to do both during the Obama administration and now in the
Trump disaster is to dismantle the changes and destroy the structure
that enabled those changes. They want to erase the past which is not
possible but they are giving it their best effort.
What
we need going forward is to bring back stability and to repair our
structures. We do not need a complete overhaul going forward, we need to
bring back stability because without that there will be no structure
upon which anything can be built. There will be no improvement in civil
rights or healthcare or climate change or anything else. There will be
nothing but more destruction.
There are
people who believe that President Obama is in the past but how president
Obama spent his time in office was building the support structure for
the future. That structure remains the structure we need going forward
as it is a structure of stability and without stability there will be
chaos and nothing will be able to stand.
Joe
Biden has said that the essence of his presidency is to bring back
stability. He is the candidate in the best position to do that. It his
age and with all of the loss he has had to deal with in his past I would
tend to think that having to go through all that is needed to become
president and then to fulfill the responsibilities of being president
that he would really rather take the easy road and live a quiet life. He
has gone through all of this twice before. It only makes sense to me
that he is doing this at this time because he feels called to this time
in order to rid us of Trump and to restore the legacy of President Obama
as the loss of that legacy has to be personal to him as well as it is
also his legacy and I am certain he feels an intense loyalty to both
President Obama and to the future of our Democracy.
I
am a one issue voter. It is mandatory that we beat Trump and we can't
be complacent or take it for granted that we will be able to do that so
we are going to have to be very thoughtful and responsible about how we
proceed and to that end even if Trump somehow is no longer in office
before the next election I will be voting for Joe Biden in the primary
because the needs going forward will be the same and I hope that others
who read what I have written will take it to heart and not leave
anything to chance.
The next election is
without a doubt the most important in our lifetime. We need to make a
wise choice and understand what might happen if we leave anything have
control over to chance. It seems clear to me that Joe Biden is the most
electable candidate and therefore if we are serious about beating Trump
then we need to vote for Biden in the primary which will give him the
greatest possibility of winning the primary and that will give us the
greatest possibility of winning the next election which is the most
important election of out lifetime.
