Thursday open thread: President Joe Biden at the United Nations
I was going to write about twice-impeached, four-times indicted, serial rapist Donald Trump's laughable attempt to appear to be pro-choice by calling Florida governor Ron DeSantis' six-week abortion ban "horrible," suckering the gullible yet again into thinking he's some closet liberal.
And then I thought of what my governor Gavin Newsom said on CNN. Media coverage is 24/7 Trump. And I'm going to take a stand here.
Pres. Biden was at the UN this week. And as usual he excelled, his decades of experience on the global stage standing him in good stead as he continues the work of rebuilding America's image and influence in the world after Trump's disastrous regime. As is customary, he gave an address to the General Assembly. And you know what? It was very well received. He didn't suffer the indignity his predecessor did when the world literally laughed at him. Even former president George W. Bush was laughed out of the Assembly during his eight speeches.
I know people cavil and carp about Pres. Biden. But the fact is this: world leaders respect him. The United States is respected again with the Trump regime gone. Pres. Biden is a leader in the tradition of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter. He sells the ideal of America; his predecessor turned this country into a den of thieves, for sale to the highest bidder. A man whose entire life has been one long con is not one to carry American ideals—however imperfect, however often honored in the breach rather than in the observance—to the world. And Joe Biden believes in America. He believes that this country is, in the aggregate, a force for good. Trump? "We're not so innocent, you know." And no, we're not; but he said this not to rectify the wrongs we've committed, but to excuse the wrongs he was in the process of committing, and to excuse the dictators he admired as they ravaged their own populations and the states around them.
For this day before the autumn equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, a masterclass on what a true leader should sound like.
