Weekend self-care open thread: Happy Halloween y feliz Día de los Muertos!
Growing up the son of Cuban emigres, we didn't really do Día de los Muertos. That's not much of a Cuban commemoration. But once I moved out to LA, I discovered the rich traditions my Mexican and Mexican-American neighbors had over this holiday. It's a day of remembrance, of keeping those gone close to us, a day to celebrate their lives and the lives which went before them.
Of course, this is not in any way to slag Halloween. I'm no longer much of a celebrant, but the holiday is a delight to children of all ages, when for one day you can trespass what society expects of you, and take on another skin.
This weekend, a celebration of both traditions.
Remember those who have gone before us, just as we, in our turn, will go.
As always, be kind to yourselves and those around you.
