Thursday open thread: The Establishment Bar Book Club!

Howdy, good people!

I've been mulling this over, in my ever-evolving quest to bring more than just politics to this joint. One of the pleasures of my job is conducting my monthly book club. At any session I have eight to ten enthusiastic book lovers attending; they often say that it is also the highlight of the month for them.

Well, I thought: Why can't we do that here? We're a bright bunch who love to jabber about things besides politics.

So, here it is: The Establishment Bar Book Club!

Our first book will be James, by Percival Everett. It is the book that we read for my work book club this month. It is a magnificent reimagining of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, told from the point of view of the slave Jim. I haven't quite figured out how we will conduct an online book club, but: I'm a librarian. I can look it up.

Although I'm choosing this first book, I want to get suggestions from all of you for future reading. So share any ideas you have in the comments.

As I always say, life is so much more than politics. Art, music, literature: these are the things which make life worth living. I'm very excited about this new feature!

So, comment away, and pick up a copy at your local library.

This is your open thread.

Postscript

Well duh, I guess I should give a date for the first book club! It'll be March 12.
