Monday open thread: What are your favorite holiday traditions?
Obviously, this week posting of political things will be nonexistent. I've made a decision to just lean into the holiday week and make this week one long self-care moment. We need it. We need a time to rejuvenate and recover. The news is awful, the people in charge are evil, and we need to take care of ourselves.
Tomorrow we will celebrate the Reason for the Season: Festivus! But today I'm opening the floor. What are your favorite holiday traditions? Favorite foods? Favorite games?
For me, as a Cuban, it's obviously noche buena, or Christmas Eve dinner.
We really don't do much on Christmas Day. We might go to Mass. We might visit family and friends. But Christmas Eve, noche buena, "The Good Night" is where we shine.
This Wednesday I will be gathering with my family at my brother's house. We will be having lechón asado, arroz blanco con frijoles negros, yucca, and platanos fritos. We will be eating and drinking and laughing and simply enjoying that we're a family which loves each other. We catch up with each other's lives. We simply abide and revel in each other's company. About ten years ago we decided as a family that we wouldn't buy gifts. We're all adults, successful, and don't need the stress of gift-giving. And it's worked out wonderfully.
