Super Tuesday Open Thread
Nikki Haley, we hardly knew ye.
Not that we cared to know. You were simply the latest in a line of failed GOP candidates trying to derail the Trump Train. You've fallen into the dustbin of history that now includes John Kasich, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Vivek Ramaswamy, Ron DeSantis, and Chris Christie (twice). Donald Trump is the Southern Strategy personified. He's the apex of the unholy alliance between the racist and religious right. He is the inevitable conclusion of a political movement based on White male grievance. Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee for president for the third consecutive time and nothing short of a catastrophic health failure will prevent him from going head-to-head against Joe Biden in November.
Robert Mueller didn't save us. Two separate impeachments didn't save us. The E. Jean Carroll and Letitia James civil cases hurt his ego and his wallet but didn't save us. The six conservative Supreme Court justices and Aileen Cannon certainly won't save us. Even if he somehow gets convicted, Trump will appeal. He'll stall and delay. He'll play the victim. He'll do what he has always done: use his White privilege to shirk responsibility. At this point, there is nothing he can do that would dissuade the GOP base from supporting him.
Today's Super Tuesday results should motivate us all to get into general election mode. We are the only ones preventing a fascist takeover of the United States. The only surviving vestige of the Founders' dream of avoiding a monarchy is the democratic process. Yes, we wish it were one person, one vote. But for now at least, with Democrats holding power in a number of key swing states, it is our election to lose. But it starts today. It starts now. In reality, it started well before now. There is no more fence-sitting when one of America's two major political parties is hellbent on authoritarian rule. Early voting in key swing states starts in under 7 months. We have to flip the House. We have to hold the Senate on what will be razor-thin margins. And we have to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to four more years in the Oval Office.
Now let's get to work.
