Weekend self-care open thread: Hip Hop's golden age

Growing up in New York, me and my friends were quickly enamored of hip hop culture. From school dances to basement parties, the likes of RUN DMC, Whodini, Kurtis Blow, Afrika Bamabaataa, and Grandmaster Flash were our soundtrack.

But even though I loved that music, I will argue that hip hop's true golden age was in the late 1980s / early 1990s.

Digable Planets. A Tribe Called Quest. The Wu Tang Clan. These were giants. These were people who took rap lyricism to whole new levels. Their rhymes and flows have not been equaled since. And they were the last great rappers to create pastiches of music with their expert sampling. Their instruments were turntables and their voices.

For this weekend's extended self-care, the golden age of hip hop.

And, as always, be beautiful to yourselves and those around you.
