Thursday open thread: Everyone just chill
From the braying of the great and the good blue checks on Twitter, you'd think that the Biden administration was on its last legs. In fact, this is what's happened/is happening:
- President Joe Biden and the Democrats passed the most comprehensive economic aid package to tackle the effects of the pandemic in a couple of generations. People are getting help, something which Republicans always say the government is awful at.
- Based on vacancies, Democrats are about to confirm a slew of judges, topping the effects of the former guy's attempts to ruin the judiciary.
- The collapse of bipartisan infrastructure talks is a good thing. The pantomime was necessary, but it's now over, and Pres. Biden's package will now pass according to budget reconciliation rules. Of course, the GOP will vote no and take the dough, so it's up to us to make sure people know who's buttering their bread.
- Vice President Kamala Harris is the Biden enforcer, put in charge of various tasks which will burnish her CV. And yes, the brayers are saying "It's just like Jared," except Jared wasn't elected, while he was and remains a moron.
- Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has scheduled a vote on the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Schumer is not a fool. Just because we don't see what's happening that doesn't mean that things aren't happening.
- There was record turnout for the Virginia Democratic primaries. Democratic "lack of enthusiasm" seems to be a chimera.
There's a too-large class of liberal blue check pundits whose stock in trade is despair and defeatism. And it's not helped by the likes of the person featured yesterday in the comments who was not going to vote for any Democrat in 2022 or 2024 because her student loans hadn't been forgiven. These people are what I like to call buffoons. Don't listen to them, don't pay them any mind. Your blood pressure will thank you.
Part of having a winning culture is acting like you're winning. It also helps that we're actually, you know, winning. I truly don't understand where all the gloom and doom is coming from. But we've been conditioned to expect the worst, to await the other shoe to drop, to think that the GOP consists of diabolical super geniuses who will always outwit us. For God's sake, yesterday Louie Gohmert asked the Forest Service if we could alter the moon's orbit to fight climate change! Treat these mouthbreathers with the derision they deserve. Don't accord them powers they don't have, because then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Concern trolling is not being vigilant. It's a path to despondency. As Democrats we have to get out of this mindset hammered into us by a generation of Republican-biased media narratives that we're losers. The GOP hasn't won a presidential popular vote since 2004. Snap out of it!
We'll have a lot of fights ahead. The one we shouldn't have is with ourselves.
