Weekend self-care open thread: The late, great McCoy Tyner
News broke yesterday of the passing of one of the titans of jazz: pianist McCoy Tyner.
Tyner came to fame as sideman for another titan of jazz, John Coltrane. He played with Coltrane's quartet until the great saxophonist's death in 1965, touring constantly in the early Sixties. His piano lines on Coltrane's signature anthem, "My Favorite Things", were as memorable as Coltrane's saxophone flights.
After Coltrane, Tyner toured and recorded up until his death. He was one of jazz's greatest pianists, as far as I'm concerned on a level with Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett.
For this weekend's self-care thread, let's send him off on waves of music.
