Weekend self-care open thread: Rest in power, Rob Base
On Friday, millions of Generation X cried out, disturbing the Force. Rob Base, half of the duo Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, composers of the iconic 1988 song "It Takes Two", passed away at the age of 59 from cancer. (FUCK CANCER.)
It is a sad fact that those of us of a certain age have reached the point in our lives where artists of our generation are passing away from the ailments to whom all are subject. It brings us face-to-face with our mortality, and the realization that we have many more years behind us than we do ahead of us. The death of someone like Rob Base, who for many of us formed part of our life's soundtrack, is especially gutting. The deaths of artists like David Bowie, Prince, and Michael Jackson were jarring. But Rob Base was one of us. He grew up the way we did. He had the same cultural references. And that makes his passing all the more relevant for many of us.
For this weekend's self-care, we honor Rob, revisit his music, and the music of those halcyon days, before the internet, before 24/7 media, when we were not all enmeshed in the Matrix.
