Tuesday open thread: Let's Talk Elections on YouTube
My general rule of thumb for YouTube is this: I do not look at politics channels. I avoid them all because I do not want the YouTube algorithm to start spitting out every hottake there is. My YouTube viewing is for animals and music and art and history and sports.
But I do follow one or two accounts. For me to follow you, you have to not be a huge account like Meidas Touch with its clickbait headlines—DISASTROUS MORNING FOR TRUMP! Until something happens which runs Donald Trump out on the rails, not much is "disastrous" for him.
I don't remember how I happened upon Let's Talk Elections. The channel owner is a data nerd, and boy howdy he is a big data nerd. But he's not a schmuck like Harry Enten or Steve Kornacki. Unlike them, he doesn't present data which is good for Democrats as somehow being "good news for John McCain". He is a Democratic Party supporter. While he may criticize party leadership, he doesn't do it from a place of tamping down enthusiasm. And most of his videos lay out the very good landscape in which Democrats find themselves heading into November.
The party could do far worse than supporting channels like this. Spending millions on consultants is not going to get us the House and Senate back. Focusing on channels like Let's Talk Elections would be money much better spent.
I think that the man behind the channel, Ethan Kelly, is honest enough that if the numbers were bad for Democrats he would lay that out. The fortunate thing is that they are not.
For our open thread here are a few of his videos. Let me know what you think in the comments.
