Weekend self-care open thread: In memoriam, Sonny Rollins
Well. As with last weekend's in memoriam to Rob Base, this weekend we celebrate another leading light, the tzaddik Sonny Rollins, passed away on 25 May.
As I wrote last weekend, it is a truism among those of us of a certain age that we have more years behind us than ahead of us, and we increasingly see our heroes pass away.
Sonny was a giant of jazz. He was a firm exponent of that most American of musical arts.
For this weekend, I'm sharing a "lost" Sonny Rollins performance. It took place at the legendary London venue, Ronnie Scott's. The BBC broadcast it in 1974, but only three songs. The rest of the performance was thought to be lost. But the disparate pieces were found years ago, and recomposed. This is a perfect encapsulation of an artist at the height of his powers.
As always, dear friends, be ever kind, gentle, and joyful with yourselves and those around you. Share your favorite videos in the comments.
