Are you a Beatles fan, or a Rolling Stones fan? At one point, the choice was as stark as Yankees and Dodgers, Liverpool and Everton, Frick and Frack. Fortunately, my brothers loved both, so I grew up listening to the genius of both bands.
Stones frontman and co-songwriter Sir Mick Jagger completed eighty circuits around our star this week. Sir Mick created the role of the exuberant frontman. He created the idea of a wild focus for what was happening onstage, the writhing, sybaritic master of ceremonies. He and songwriting partner Keith Richards transmuted Black American blues music into mass appeal, while always keeping true to the music's roots.
So, raise a toast to Sir Mick. Cent'anni!
