Weekend self-care open thread: Happy St. Paddy's Day!
Hullo everyone! We're going to get an early start on the weekend since Friday is St. Patrick's Day.
A short history of Patrick.
His name was Patricius, and he was the son of Romanized Britons. He was captured by Irish raiders and sold into slavery on the island. He managed to escape back to Britain. He studied and then went back to Ireland to convert the people to Christianity. As such, he became Ireland's patron saint. And no, he didn't chase snakes out of the island; that was a myth to symbolize him driving out pagan gods.
The holiday has spread around the world due to the Irish diaspora. Growing up in New York City, St. Paddy's Day—and it's Paddy, not Patty—was a huge deal. I even went to the parade a couple of times, as Catholic schools closed for the day.
I, for one, will be enjoying libations at home to celebrate the life of Sanctus Patricius. And for this weekend we'll take in Irish comedy, music, and culture.
As always, dear friends, be ever kind to yourselves and those around you. Sláinte!
