Weekend Self-Care: Celebrating Taylor Swift's Engagement!
Well, to be honest I wasn't one for the longest time. After all, I don't believe in celebrity worship as I feel it leads to unhealthy obsessions. But every once in a while a celebrity takes a courageous stand that makes me stand up and take notice. This was Taylor Swift in 2018 when she publicly came out against sitting Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn for being "Trump in a wig". The behind-the-scenes conversation was revelatory; it showed how Swift was being pressured by both her management team and her own family to keep quiet and sing and do it without being political. But Swift knew she couldn't stay silent. She knew that Blackburn was terrible for Tennessee and was particularly terrible for women. She knew she was alienating tens of thousands of fans by supporting Blackburn's opponent but her own Rubicon had been crossed. She knew she had a platform and she chose to use that platform for good.
Since that moment, Swift has been a staunch Democrat. She endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024. Her 2024 endorsement was a direct rebuke of J.D. Vance's grotesque "childless cat ladies" comments from 2021 and she made it perfectly clear that she didn't appreciate how the Trump/Vance ticket viewed unmarried women. She immediately went on to encourage her fans to register to vote and by doing so was able to help register nearly 400,000 new voters in the 24 hours after endorsing Kamala Harris. She became a lightning rod for MAGA criticism, largely because they assumed the blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl who started doing country music at age 14 was one of them. But she wasn't. And MAGA once again tried and failed to have someone, anyone of fame and importance actually identify as a registered Republican.
Swift's engagement this past week to Kansas City Chiefs star player Travis Kelce has once again rattled Republicans. Ever since they started dating, Swift and Kelce have been the power couple that Republicans love to hate. Swift because she's a solid Democrat and Kelce because he had the audacity to team up with Pfizer to promote COVID and flu vaccinations in the fall of 2023. The 2024 Super Bowl was Republicans' worst nightmare with Kelce playing in the big game and Swift being featured in the stands. Kelce's Chiefs won and he and Swift celebrated on the field after the game. It was a classic moment where America won and Republicans lost.
This weekend, let us enjoy Taylor and Travis and their millennial love. They're one of the good power couples who use their celebrity for good. They deserve all the happiness they get in this lifetime for simply being good, decent human beings. The world needs more of this, especially with everything going on in Washington. Let's enjoy this power couple as their engagement as once again triggered MAGA to all-time rage levels. Put simply when MAGA cries, America wins.
