Open thread—Happy Impeachment Eve!
Tomorrow's going to be lit, as the kids say, as the House takes up articles of impeachment against supposed president Donald Trump.
When Democrats first assumed office earlier this year, I wrote that impeachment was both morally and politically warranted. Now we're on the brink of a new chapter in the saga we've been in since 2016.
Make no mistake: This isn't an end. If Nancy Pelosi sends the articles to the Senate for a trial, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already said he'll make sure Trump is acquitted. And the kind of trial McConnell decides to or indicates he will hold plays in Pelosi's calculus. She may very well keep the articles in her pocket, until House Democrats can get evidence—the Mueller report, grand jury transcripts, financial records—which can add to the bill of particulars.
The only reason we're discussing such scenarios is because there's never been a criminal in the White House like Donald Trump. Richard Nixon, for all his malfeasance, wasn't a traitor beholden to America's enemies for his position. And the GOP of the 1970s had some patriots who told Nixon it was time to go. Such people don't exist today.
What will happen over the next few months? Hell, what will happen over the next few weeks? We have no idea. "Unprecedented" is a word we've beat to death, but that's where we are. We are in a struggle between believers in a democratic republic and proponents of right-wing autocracy. We have no choice but to fight and win.
