Weekend self-care open thread—Ladies and gentlemen, Joy Division!
Punk lasted longer in the US than in the UK. It took off in the UK only after American punk bands like the Ramones went there and lit a fire. By 1979 it was pretty much over.
Its influence is still felt in pop music, but the music which came after, for my money, was even more influential. Post-punk was the blueprint for most of the indie rock music of the 1980s and to today.
The most seminal of the post-punk bands was Joy Division. From its dark, melodic songs to the tragic arc of its lead singer Ian Curtis, it's had the most influence of any of the bands which sprang up from 1979-1981.
For this weekend's self-care thread, we sample some of their music.
