Weekend self-care open thread: In celebration of National Poetry Month

Happy weekend, friends!

April is the cruelest month. But it is also National Poetry Month!

As a soi-disant poet, I love this month. I will always put up a book display at work for it. I will recommend books of poetry to anyone and everyone.

What came first? Poetry or music? I would argue they are co-equal as the First Art. They informed each other, melded with each other, supported each other. In ancient Greece, poetry wasn't read; it was sung to music and listened to by crowds in the theater. It was a religious experience as much as an artistic one.

This weekend we celebrate the incantatory spoken word, which brings us closer to the gods.

Am I choking up writing this post? Yes, I am. Poetry is the power of the world. It is how humans reveal themselves to themselves. It is, really, the core of being human, able to distill human experience into a few lines.

As always, dear friends, be ever kind, gentle, and joyful with yourselves and those around you.

And all shall be well and
All manner of thing shall be well
When the tongues of flames are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.
